Behind the Scenes: Day 1

Today was our first day of filming (14th February 2012) and here are a few behind the scene clips of us at the first location which was 'Bracklyn Street'. This was an outside location and it shows a little bit of the scenery and some of the things we shot. 

Roles and responsibilities’ for the title sequence

Before we begin filming our title sequence, we need to allocate roles and responsibilities’ to ensure everything runs smoothly.

I plan to take part in:

- Planning

- Filming

- Editing

- Creating the music

- Helping to direct

- Casting

- Costume

- Lighting

These are some of the key areas required for the creation of our title sequence, so I think it’s important that I play a part in each one.

Personal Skills Audit

I have learnt and developed a lot of new skills since starting this topic that will benefit me throughout the creation of my title sequence.

One of the first and most important skill that I have definitely improved on is my organisational skills. I have learnt how to divide my time equally in order to complete given tasks. Not only that but I have got better at completing work on time. I've also improved on organising equipment so that I have everything needed for a lesson.







Another skill I have developed is blogging things using blogger and making the blogs look as creative and intriguing as possible. I was introduced to wordle, prezi and other devices that help to boost marks. Ive improved on blogging in general, keeping up to date with blogs and blogging individually about other things.


I have learnt new skills using new software such as Final Cut Pro.



I have learnt how to import and edit clips using final cut. Also i learnt how to change the opacity of a clip so that they overlap, change the colour of the clip (black and white) and to add text into the clip. I will be using this software for my title sequence.

I have learnt new skills, using Soundtrack pro.



I have learnt how to insert the sound for a clip using soundtrack and by taking some of the sounds installed on the software.


I have also developed more skills when working as a team. This whole project involved working as a team and good communication in order for us all to reach a common goal. We've had to all take on individual responsibilities in order for a successful outcome

Booking Equipment

To ensure that we had all the necessary equipment to begin filming our opening, we had to fill in the booking sheet below so that it could be reserved for us to use on the dates selected.

After we presented our pitch, and were allowed to film, we booked the equipment needed.

Clothing

We will have 2 main characters within our Opening Title sequence, The woman that is the main villian and the man that has been tied up.

We had to think carefully on what their costumes would because it has to be something that would blend in with the rest of the atmosphere without it seeming out of place.

you will never fully see the lady but she will be wearing very normal clean clothes, we thought this would connect with the audience more because she would seem like a normal person on the outside which would make them think.

For the man thats been tied up, we decided that he will be wearing no shirt and shoes to show a unseen struggle between the two characters.

Media Institutions

We have decided that because we are a low budget film, We the type of media institurion that will help distribute our film will be a independent British.

Step 1: We will Produce our film, and edit it making sur its of a high quality.

Step 2: We will distribute our film and help marketize it in different ways that are less expensive but just as effective.

- For example Viral marketing, we will use websites such as facebook in order to get people interested in seeing our movie.

- We will also be attending film festivals in places such as Cannes and London ( picture above)

Other cheap ways of advertising will be, posters/ adverts in magazines and Interviews.

Foley sounds

During our media lesson, we recorded several foley sounds in order to use it in our thriller title sequence.

Equipment booking

We had to book several equipments in order to successfully shoot. We'll be collecting all the equipments from college on Tuesday 14th February at 2pm.

The equipments that we will we borrow are:

Camera - to shoot our thriller sequence

Memory card - to insert it in the camera and save our recordings

Tripod - to use it while shooting certain shots

Dedo-Lights - to create a good effect

Dimmer - to adjust the lighting

Character Profiles

Character 1: Female

This is the main character of the title sequence and is the one who would feature throughout the film. She has tied up one of the men who were involved in the deaths of her parents in order to seek revenge. Her identity is unclear in the opening to create a sense of mystery.

Costume: All black

Props: None

Character 2: Male

One of the characters that feature in our opening title sequence is a man who is tied up against his own will, and is one of the first characters’ victims. He was apart of the people who killed her parents in front of him, hence why he is there, but this is unclear to the audience.

Costume: Shorts and dirty, ripped t-shirt

Props: None

Pre-production: Planning locations

We are going to begin filming on Tuesday 14th February on Bracklyn Street and have planned our journey there using Journey Planner. It is a 15min walk from our college or we can get the 56 bus to Essex Road and walk from there.

We have created and confirmed the production schedule in which we are planning to film. We have contacted the three mills studio to ask if it would be possible to shoot there and we are awaiting there response. If they allow us to shoot there, then we will be shooting from 14th February - 20th February.

We began to plan the production schedule and the venue's that we are going to use for the production of the title sequence.

Here are a few behind the scene clips of the creation of the foley sound that we will be using for our title sequence. It shows us creating the sound for the "tapping nails".

What happens in a horror film?

These are few words highlighting the key elements that appear in a horror film.

Film classifaction

U FILM - Suitable for all. 'U' films should be set within a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror.


PG FILM - Parental Guidance - general viewing but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children.


12 FILM - Suitable for 12 years and over.


15 FILM - Suitable for 15 years and older.

18 FILM - Suitable for only adults.


I personally think that my film should be classified as "18" because its a horror movie so therefore violent scenes, dangerous weapons and disturbing scenes will be shown. Additionally, bad language will be used which will inappropriate for a younger audience. 

Group Skills audit

In order to complete our project, we have been using both software and equipment for this and have learnt a lot from the equipment, software and skills also.

Whilst using equipments such as professional JVC cameras we have learnt some health and safety issues that go along with it. for example we must never leave the equipment unattentded especiall if we're filming away from the sixth form because there is a higher risk of the camera either getting stolen or damaged.

-We must also never drink or eat near the camera because it my damage the screen not allowing us to have very high quality professional looking footage for the audience to watch.



We have also used programmes such as Final cut pro and Soundtrack pro
Sountrack pro allowsus to add foley sund t our footage which has avery professional end result
Final cut pro however allows us to edit out footage and i have learnt to add transitions such a fade ins and fade outs which look very nice while you replay the footage.

Discrete Title Sequence

For my opening title sequence, we have decided to take the approach of a discrete title sequence. Some common elements of a discrete title sequence consist of fast-paced editing, jump cuts, non-diegetic sound and sound that hints the genre. It's not always clear what the genre of the film is. There is usually moments where there is the time is manipulated (fast and slow). Occasionally, discrete title sequences show overlapping and layered images where the opacity has been altered.

A few examples of discrete title sequences are Se7en, Enemy of the State and Arlington Road.

Final Ideas - storyboard

eneeWe have had to slightly alter our ideas for the opening title sequence because our original idea seemed to give too much of the story away. Our current and final storyboard is as follows:

This was already part of our original storyboard however it has been put into more detail, and the additional parts to it have been discarded. By just having this opening part, it allows the film to be a mystery and only gives away certain information such as the genre and what they can expect to see throughout. 

Other title sequence influences.

SEVEN is the first title sequence that has influenced the way that we will create our opening title sequence. The way that the credits appear has definitely been the most influential because the font and effect that has been applied to them, definitely conveys an element of a thriller. They are jumpy and seem to slightly shake which is how I would like our titles to look, because they really connote the sense of thriller and danger. Also, the fast-paced editing is another inspiration I would like to take from this because it shows a range of things and doesn't give away the story.

Influences for the treatment.

Some of the films that have influenced the overall treatment are:

LAW ABIDING CITIZEN:

Both of these films are about seeking revenge for their loved ones who were brutally killed in front of them. Our treatment has the same sort of concept and was definitely influenced by the storylines in these films.

Treatment for the whole film

Our entire film is about a girl who witnessed her parents being brutally murdered in front of her, and in order to seek revenge, finds herself committing horrific crimes.
The opening title sequence will show a man tied up which will imply that he is being tortured. We don't want the relationship between the girl and the boy to be clear or obvious, to allow the audience to make their own assumptions and opinions on it.

Risk assessment

The website of the studio is: www.3mills.com

This form is a health and safety form of the studios. People must fill this in in order to use any rehearsal rooms.

What risks can be found in the 3 Mills Studio?

• Anyone can trip over in the studio
• Bad weather conditions can interrupt us from travelling to the studio
• There can be fire in the studio

How can we overcome these issues?

• Walk carefully around the studio, noting activities that might pose a risk and take into consideration what the manager of the studio says about the health and safety guidance.
• Check the weather forecast before booking the studio.
