Q7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

When making the preliminary task  we focused on learning and preparing for the thriller opening the editing software in order to edit our thriller openings independently. The software we used to edit our opening it Final cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro to create a background soundtrack for the opening.

Firstly we have to plan the story board for our prelim task this help us decide which shots we were going to shoot in what chronological order.

In the preliminary task we had to consider the mise en scene and it would appeal to the audience and learnt about how to keep continuity. We also learnt how to keep the 180 degree and when editing we had to make sure there was no match cuts. 

We then had to focus on our camera work how to successfully shoot camera angles in order to produce the best quality of footage. 

What I have learnt from both tasks is how to use Final cut Pro in order to edit our opening. What I have learnt through both productions is how to work with a professional camera and camera shots. Also that the planning process is vital in order to film, what I did when filming the opening is a planning schedule is helped me prepare thoroughly what needs to be done and what day.

Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?

In my opinion what I think appealed to the audience the most is the setting and the location. It is very important to establish the setting and in order to do this you need to make sure that you have a really good one. The opening of the scene our group decided to have an establishing shot because this is one of the normal conventions of a film opening. Then the interior of the building was all black where the male, victim character is tied up to a chair. There were no props and the mise en scene was just black.

Overall the setting it very mysterious which arouses the audience to watch on and find out what happens, the location helps indicate what kind of genre the film is going to be. For instance if you had a old mansion people would assume that it is haunted, and in my case I used a warehouse which could of foreboded danger or that maybe something violent may occur.

Furthermore I have decided not to show the main characters face, this is because it creates suspense. I understand from research that my target audience, young adults like thriller movies to seek excitement and to be entertained. This is why our group named the film 'The Edge.'

How i have reached my audience so far by cinema screening and i have uploaded the opening onto YouTube and also by uploading the video onto Facebook.  I used viral marketing methods to reach my audience.

Q4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

The sub genre to my opening The Edge is focusing mainly on young adults, usually the age is aimed at 18+. This is because psychological thrillers are based on people who may be mentally disturbed and may lead to violence that may seem disturbing to the others from a younger age group. But thrillers are targeted on the younger audience because they mainly visit the cinemas to be thrilled whereas an older audience may go to think and unravel plots like political espionage.  However our opening ideally is targeting young adults because legally most thrillers are classified 18 and above. The sub genre for my opening is horror because it contains elements of gore.

The target audience I focused on is a range of people, from ages to 15 up to late 30’s.

Q4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

The wider audience for a thriller film genre in general are adults above the age of 17 as most thriller films are classified as '18 and above.' Thriller films are meant to be entertaining and keep the audience at the edge of their seats. Thriller films are aimed at both genders especially targeted at people whom like realistic/scary story lines.


My film is a psychological thriller. 'The Edge' is aimed at teenagers: 15-30 years old. This is because my film doesn't contain any inappropriate content for teenagers who are 15 years old. All content is suitable and portrays the story of a young girl's life whom is seeking revenge from a guy due to her past family history. Its a psychological thriller because at the end of the film, the audience will know that the girl is suffering from mental conditions - this will be portrayed in a scary way as several jumpy scenes will be shown. My film is aimed at people whom are 15-30 years old and they enjoy suspense, an interesting story and the film will keep them focused because a 'psychological thriller' will play with their minds.


The unique selling point of my film is that I haven't revealed the identity of the actors in the sequence as they are portrayed in a dim light. This creates suspense and engages the audience to watch the film. Also, both the actors in my film are around the same age category as my target audience, this would create a personal interaction with the audience as they'll be more interested to watch the film. Finally, I have created a contrast on the stereotypical views of the youth in the media industry as I have portrayed the female character in a powerful role in comparison to the male character because he is being tortured by the girl and is shown to be weak. However, a stereotypical view is that male characters are always portrayed more dominant with muscular features and female characters are always portrayed 'dependent' on male characters.
