Question 7 of Evaluation

Q7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

When making the preliminary task  we focused on learning and preparing for the thriller opening the editing software in order to edit our thriller openings independently. The software we used to edit our opening it Final cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro to create a background soundtrack for the opening.
Here is a video talking about the three stages when filming.

Firstly we have to plan the story board for our prelim task this help us decide which shots we were going to shoot in what chronological order.
This is the video of our preliminary task - storyboard

And here is the video for our thriller opening.

In the preliminary task we had to consider the mise en scene and it would appeal to the audience and learnt about how to keep continuity. We also learnt how to keep the 180 degree and when editing we had to make sure there was no match cuts.

We then had to focus on our camera work how to successfully shoot camera angles in order to produce the best quality of footage.
What I have learnt from both tasks is how to use Final cut Pro in order to edit our opening. What I have learnt through both productions is how to work with a professional camera and camera shots. Also that the planning process is vital in order to film, what I did when filming the opening is a planning schedule is helped me prepare thoroughly what needs to be done and what day.

Question 5 of Evaluation

Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?

In my opinion what I think appealed to the audience the most is the setting and the location. It is very important to establish the setting and in order to do this you need to make sure that you have a really good one. The opening of the scene our group decided to have an establishing shot because this is one of the normal conventions of a film opening. Then the interior of the building was all black where the male, victim character is tied up to a chair. There were no props and the mise en scene was just black.

Overall the setting it very mysterious which arouses the audience to watch on and find out what happens, the location helps indicate what kind of genre the film is going to be. For instance if you had a old mansion people would assume that it is haunted, and in my case I used a warehouse which could of foreboded danger or that maybe something violent may occur.

Furthermore I have decided not to show the main characters face, this is because it creates suspense. I understand from research that my target audience, young adults like thriller movies to seek excitement and to be entertained. This is why our group named the film 'The Edge.'

How i have reached my audience so far by cinema screening and i have uploaded the opening onto YouTube and also by uploading the video onto Facebook.  I used viral marketing methods to reach my audience.

Here is some feedback from the audience.

Question 4 of Evaluation

Q4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

The sub genre to my opening The Edge is focusing mainly on young adults, usually the age is aimed at 18+. This is because psychological thrillers are based on people who may be mentally disturbed and may lead to violence that may seem disturbing to the others from a younger age group. But thrillers are targeted on the younger audience because they mainly visit the cinemas to be thrilled whereas an older audience may go to think and unravel plots like political espionage.  However our opening ideally is targeting young adults because legally most thrillers are classified 18 and above. The sub genre for my opening is horror because it contains elements of gore.
The target audience I focused on is a range of people, from ages to 15 up to late 30’s.

Here are some of the people who watched my opening.

Q7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Example of a match cut used in the prelim task. This helped me gain several camera skills, I practiced using the camera which helped me during my film opening.

Example of a shot reverse shot used in the prelim task. This help me achieve the 180 degree rule.

Q4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

The wider audience for a thriller film genre in general are adults above the age of 17 as most thriller films are classified as '18 and above.' Thriller films are meant to be entertaining and keep the audience at the edge of their seats. Thriller films are aimed at both genders especially targeted at people whom like realistic/scary story lines.

My film is a psychological thriller. 'The Edge' is aimed at teenagers: 15-30 years old. This is because my film doesn't contain any inappropriate content for teenagers who are 15 years old. All content is suitable and portrays the story of a young girl's life whom is seeking revenge from a guy due to her past family history. Its a psychological thriller because at the end of the film, the audience will know that the girl is suffering from mental conditions - this will be portrayed in a scary way as several jumpy scenes will be shown. My film is aimed at people whom are 15-30 years old and they enjoy suspense, an interesting story and the film will keep them focused because a 'psychological thriller' will play with their minds.

The unique selling point of my film is that I haven't revealed the identity of the actors in the sequence as they are portrayed in a dim light. This creates suspense and engages the audience to watch the film. Also, both the actors in my film are around the same age category as my target audience, this would create a personal interaction with the audience as they'll be more interested to watch the film. Finally, I have created a contrast on the stereotypical views of the youth in the media industry as I have portrayed the female character in a powerful role in comparison to the male character because he is being tortured by the girl and is shown to be weak. However, a stereotypical view is that male characters are always portrayed more dominant with muscular features and female characters are always portrayed 'dependent' on male characters.

Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

GoAnimate.com: Question 2: How does your media product represent by ayesha-ahmed94

Speaker 1: What does the term representation mean? What social group have you represented in your film opening? And have you represented them in a positive or a negative aspect?

Speaker 2: The way groups are presented in the media and popular culture, often through stereotypical images that affect our views of gender, race, class, age, and ability. My media product represents a youth social group in a stereotypical manner but with contrast in gender differentiation. The  sub-genre of my thriller sequence is psychological thriller my film has a female in the leading role this creates a contrast with the stereotypical views of youth social groups because a male is portrayed in a dominant way with stereotypically masculine features such as violence and aggression. However, in my media product the female character is shown to be involved in crime and violence. Whereas, the male character is portrayed in an innocent light as he is being tortured by the female character because she is more superior. I have represented the female character in a negative aspect but the male character in a slightly positive aspect as he is innocent and is portrayed as a victim in order to create contrast. My film displays common stereotypes of young people as both the characters are teenagers - around 17 years old. The female character is represented in a stereotypical manner as she is involved in crime, violence and aggression.

Speaker 1: Great work. Where have you learnt this from?

Speaker 2: Thank you. From an AS student named Ayesha Ahmed who studies media in city and islington sixth form college.

Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Question 5 ( Evaluation )

- Think about what aspects of your opening appeal to the target audience: Mise en scene, Actors? Storyline? Genre? Location? Action? Sound/score? Film name? Production Company?

We have tried to use some of the above things in the list in order for it to appeal a lot more to our specific target audience. For example seeing as it’s a psychological thriller the mise en scene shouldn’t be busy, and the dark empty room (with minimum lighting) will connote a very empty state of mind which would then link back into it being a psychological thriller. ( see picture below )

The main character with the most amount of screen time a 18 to 19 year old male which i think would appeal a lot with our target audience because they would feel more connected if the main character is towards the same age rather than a lot younger or older, because if they weren’t the same age the audience would feel excluded.

We also took notice of the importance of the location. A warehouse looking area adds a touch of mystery to the whole scene.

- Consider the role of the rough cut feedback did it help you to improve your film in order to better appeal to the intended audience.

our rough task helped improve our skills and it also helped improve our film in order for it to appeal better to our audience because by doing the rough vut we got to understand how to work with the camera a lot more professionally in order to record shots which would would appeal to the audience a lot more.

heres a picture of the feedback on what we had to improve, we made sure that we made these changes

so far we have reached out audience through telling them about it, posting links on facebook, and also twitter, seeing as though everyone uses these social networking websites, we thought it would be an cheap and effective way of getting the word round.

Question 1 ( Evaluation )

Question: In What ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

More Detail:

First convention:   The First Hollywood convention that we used is the classic hollywood opening. This is a good way of introducing the movie location to the audience because an established shot allows us to see the surroundings of the location.

Second convention: The second convention we followed was the idea of adding in two names on the screen if the people are less significant ( Costume designer and Production designer in my case ).

Third convention:  The third convention that we followed was adding the Movie title either towards the beginning or at the middle. Doing this will allow the audience to visualise it more because they have already seen a few seconds/minutes of the title sequence.

Final convention: The final convention that we used was adding the directors name towards the end of the title sequence. We followed this convention because we thought that it would look more appealing.

Roles within the creation of the title sequence.

Throughout the creation of the title sequence, I have undertook a variety of roles, in order to complete the project within the given time.

The planning process was mostly a group effort, so I contributed to the idea of the treatment, the genre that we were aiming for, and general filming ideas.

During the production of the title sequence, I undertook the following roles:
- Planning the title sequence
- Director of Photography
- Behind the scenes filming
- One of the Camera operators
- One of the Lighting operators
- Editor
- Casting
- Helped to direct

I feel like I had quite a large contribution to the overall creation of the title sequence and asserted myself in the project.

Day 2: Editing

This is our second day of editing.

We have started to go into detail with each clip and edited the colours of the scene to create an eerie effect.

We have added transitions e.g. fade to make the scene more realistic.

This screen grab shows a bit of our editing process.

This screen grab shows the actor being tortured on the right, we have added several clips of him tied up to show this.

This screen grab shows the actor being tortured.

Close up of the girl's eyes to suggest that she is being evil and she has no guilt for her actions. Also, we don't want to reveal her real identity to the audience.

Editing of the guy being tortured and the girl looking at him.

Rough Cut: Title sequence

Feedback:
* Develop it in terms of length.
Our title sequence is 1.08 at the moment. In order to extend the length of our title sequence, we'll add in the titles and the freeze frames of the clips which should bring us up to 1.45 - the required length.

* Improve titles - font, size and placing.
We need to improve our titles by choosing an appropriate font and size. Additionally, we need to position it properly to highlight the genre of our title sequence.

* Footsteps in time.
We need to accurately import our foley sound effects so that the sound correlates with the movement.

Costume

We have decided on a basic costume for our characters as it will not be highly featured in the film.
The boy will be wearing checkered shorts with a white t-shirt that we will cover with paint and other substances in order to make it look dirty and blood-stained. The girl will be wearing all black so that her body blends into the darkness, and heels to create the sound of footsteps and signify a woman.
